How to Track AI Search Visibility When Data Is Missing

SEO November 6, 2026 · 11 min read

To track AI search visibility when the data is missing, stop waiting for one perfect report and build a small system from several imperfect signals. Pick 15 to 20 questions your customers really ask, check each month whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode mention or cite you, and log the answers in a simple sheet. Then read three supporting numbers alongside it: branded searches in Google Search Console, AI referral traffic in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), and what new customers say when asked how they found you.

This matters now because the tools are moving faster than the reporting. In October 2026, Ahrefs published guides on measuring AI search visibility when attribution falls short and on AI search ROI. Their author, Louise Linehan, puts it bluntly: "There's no Search Console for ChatGPT." The same month, Search Engine Journal reported that Google is placing inline links higher in more AI Mode and AI Overview responses, so there are more chances to be cited and more reason to know whether you are.

The method below costs only a few hours a month and gives you a trend you can trust.

Why AI search visibility is so hard to track

Traditional SEO leaves a clear trail: a search, a ranking, a click, a visit. Ahrefs' AI search ROI guide lists where AI search breaks it: someone can get a complete answer inside ChatGPT and never visit your site; when they do click, the referrer (the label telling your analytics where a visitor came from) can be stripped, so the visit looks like direct traffic; and people who act on an AI recommendation often never tell you.

A Jaipur jeweller might be recommended by ChatGPT to someone looking for kundan sets, and that buyer later types the brand name into Google. Your reports show a branded search, not an AI recommendation.

What to check afterwards: write down what you currently report as "AI search results". If the answer is "nothing" or "a referral number in GA4", you are seeing a small slice.

Build a fixed list of 15 to 20 customer questions

Ahrefs says "the best way to measure visibility is to track a sample of prompts and see who gets recommended." A prompt is simply the question someone types into an AI tool. Your list is your measuring stick, so build it carefully and keep it stable.

  • Pull real questions from sales calls, WhatsApp enquiries, reviews and the Queries tab in Search Console.
  • Mix category questions ("best property consultants in Dubai Marina"), problem questions ("how to buy Dubai property from India"), comparisons ("X vs Y") and two or three branded questions ("is [your brand] reliable").
  • Write them the way customers talk, with city names and budgets.

Ahrefs' AI share of voice guide notes that AI responses vary, so groups of related prompts are more useful than single answers.

What to check afterwards: show the list to your sales team. If they would not recognise a question as something a buyer asks, replace it.

Run a monthly manual check in the main AI tools and Google AI Mode

Once a month, on roughly the same date, run every question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode, and note whether an AI Overview appears in normal Google results too.

  • Use a private or logged-out window where possible, so your own history shapes the answer less.
  • Run each question once and record what you see. Do not re-run until you like the result.
  • Screenshot each answer into a dated folder.

Ahrefs states that "AI answers are inherently volatile", so one month tells you little. The value comes from repeating the same check for six months or more. A Mumbai fintech might find it is named in Perplexity for "best app to track mutual funds" but never in ChatGPT. That gap is more useful than any single score.

What to check afterwards: confirm the same person ran the check with the same wording before you compare months.

Set up a simple AI visibility tracking sheet

A free Google Sheet is enough. Give each question one row per tool per month, with these columns:

  • Date of the check.
  • Question, copied exactly from your list.
  • Question type: category, problem, comparison or branded.
  • Tool: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode or AI Overview.
  • Mentioned: yes or no.
  • Cited: yes or no, was your website linked as a source.
  • Recommended instead: competitors named in the answer.
  • Sources cited: the websites the answer linked to, such as directories, news sites, Reddit threads or a competitor's blog.
  • Accuracy: were your price, location and services described correctly.
  • Notes and a screenshot link.

"Sources cited" is the most useful column. Ahrefs writes that "AI models learn what to say about your brand largely from what the rest of the web says about you", so the sites that keep appearing are where you need to be mentioned. See our Google AI Mode citation checklist.

What to check afterwards: add a summary tab counting "Mentioned" and "Cited" per tool per month.

Work out your AI share of voice

AI share of voice shows how often you appear compared with competitors. Ahrefs defines it as "the share of AI visibility your brand captures compared with the competitors you track". The basic formula: responses mentioning your brand, divided by responses mentioning any tracked brand, multiplied by 100. Choose three to five real competitors, count their mentions in your "Recommended instead" column, and calculate the share monthly.

Two warnings from the same guide. The number depends on what you chose to measure: "Change any of them and the percentage changes", so never swap questions or competitors mid-year. And "visibility isn't the same thing as outcomes": a high share does not prove anyone bought.

What to check afterwards: trust trends that hold for several months, as Ahrefs advises, and ignore one-off spikes.

Track ChatGPT and other AI referrals in GA4

When someone clicks a link inside an AI answer, GA4 can often record it. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the dimension to Session source / medium. Look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. To save filtering each month, create a custom channel group in GA4's admin settings that groups these as "AI tools".

Be honest about what this misses. Ahrefs warns that a permanent chunk of AI visits will land in direct traffic, where you can never identify them. Clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode are not labelled as a separate source in GA4's standard reports; they sit inside Google organic. Treat the AI referral figure as a floor, not the total.

Also check whether AI visitors convert. Ahrefs reports that 6.0% of its AI search visitors sign up for its free product, about four times its organic rate. Yours will differ, but the comparison is worth making.

What to check afterwards: click from ChatGPT to your own site and confirm the visit lands in the right channel, as Ahrefs did with Copilot. If GA4 is new to you, our comparison of GA4 and Adobe Analytics explains the basics.

Watch branded search and direct traffic for indirect signals

Much AI influence shows up later as people searching for you by name. In Search Console, open the Performance report, add a query filter containing your brand name and common misspellings, and note clicks and impressions monthly. A Delhi D2C brand appearing in AI answers for "best cold-pressed oils" may see branded searches rise while its GA4 AI line stays flat.

Ahrefs calls this a "directional" signal: a pattern, not proof. The same goes for direct traffic. Record it before you start AI-focused content work, then watch for unexplained increases. Ahrefs' worked example: if direct traffic converts at 2% and you see 1,000 unexplained extra visits, that suggests roughly 20 extra conversions.

Search Console already counts AI Overviews within web search data. According to Search Engine Journal, all links in an AI Overview share one position, so a link moving higher inside the overview does not change your reported position.

What to check afterwards: rule out other causes first, such as a sale, an ad campaign, a festive season or press coverage.

Ask customers how they found you

This is the cheapest and often most revealing step. Ahrefs asks, "why not just ask them?" and calls self-reported attribution "about as close to the truth as attribution gets." More than one in five people who sign up for Ahrefs say they found it through ChatGPT or Claude, which no analytics tool would have shown.

  • Add "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" and "Google AI answer" to the "How did you hear about us?" options on enquiry forms, checkout and WhatsApp intake.
  • Allow more than one answer, because buyers touch several channels.
  • Have sales record the answer in your CRM for every qualified lead. Our guide on why leads fall through the cracks without a CRM explains why.

What to check afterwards: if "AI assistant" answers rise while your sheet shows more mentions, the two signals support each other.

Tie AI search visibility to enquiries without overclaiming

Ahrefs' formula for AI search ROI is (AI revenue minus AI cost) divided by AI cost, multiplied by 100. Count only costs you would drop if you stopped AI search work. For revenue, use two estimates side by side:

  1. Tracked revenue: enquiries or sales from AI referral traffic in GA4, multiplied by your average order or deal value.
  2. Self-reported revenue: the share of new customers who named an AI tool, applied to new-customer revenue for the period.

Report both quarterly, using the same method. Ahrefs admits that "each one will likely undersell the real value of AI" and that "nobody can definitively prove the value of AI search". Say so in your report. A Dubai property firm telling partners "AI referrals produced four enquiries this quarter, and some new clients said an AI tool helped them find us" is making a defensible claim. "AI search drove a third of revenue" is not.

What to check afterwards: if you use an agency, read their AI numbers with the scepticism we recommend in how to read the reports your marketing agency sends.

How to check whether it is working

After three to six months, read the signals together:

  • Your sheet: are mentions and citations rising across most tools, and is your share of voice steady or climbing against the same competitors?
  • Accuracy: are AI tools describing your prices, locations and services correctly more often?
  • Search Console: is the branded query trend in the Performance report up on the same months last year?
  • GA4: are sessions from AI sources growing, and do they become enquiries?
  • Customers: is the share of "AI assistant" answers in your forms or CRM rising?
  • Spot check: run your three most valuable questions today and compare with month one.

If most move the same way, your visibility is improving. If only one moves, treat it as noise. For earning citations in the first place, see how D2C brands get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews and SEO in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4?

Partly. When ChatGPT passes referrer data, the visit appears in Traffic acquisition with chatgpt.com as the source. Some visits lose it and show as direct, so the GA4 figure is a minimum.

How often should I check my AI search visibility?

Monthly suits most small businesses. AI answers change from run to run, so the trend over several months matters more than any single check. Keep the questions and method identical each time.

Do I need a paid tool to track AI share of voice?

No. A fixed question list and a free Google Sheet let you calculate a basic share of voice by hand. Paid tools mainly add scale.

How do I measure AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

AI Overview clicks and impressions are counted inside normal web search data in the Performance report, and all links in an overview share one position. Watch branded and non-branded query trends month by month and read them alongside your manual checks.

Tracking AI search visibility is a steady habit, not a perfect dashboard. If you would like help setting up the question list, the GA4 channel group and a quarterly report, our SEO team can build it with you, whether you are in Jaipur, Dubai or working with our Mumbai SEO team.
